Love is Painful

Tomorrow is mine and Gene's 6th anniversary. Since Gene's been gone for 7 full days and is coming home tomorrow, it'll make the day even more special. "Absence make the heart grow fonder" has a whole new meaning after this trip. Even though it's only been a week, trying to balance a 6 month old's schedule with a 3 year old's schedule while trying to maintain a full time job, a house and the usual everyday "stuff" as a temporary single mom is TOUGH! (Kudos to every single parent out there...I am in utter awe of you!) I am always a thousand times more appreciative of everything Gene does at home while he's gone. I really am lucky to have such a fantastic husband.

Anyway, for my fantastic, absent husband I decided to do yard work as an anniversary gift. With Miles's upcoming christening we have tons of projects around the house that we're* trying to get done before our company comes in from out of town. I HATE yardwork so I thought that this was the ultimate gift. Thoughout the week I had done some here and there after work (with the help of my very generous father-in-law) and today I put both kids down for a nap and tried to do as much as I could in the short time that I had. It was going pretty well, all things considered, and I was feeling pretty accomplished when I suddenly felt a sting on my arm, wrist, foot, ankle and calf. I looked down and realized that I had stepped in a red ant hill and they were attacking me! I can only imagine what the neighbors thought as I started throwing my sneakers, socks and pants all around the yard while I ran in the house!

I am officially done with yardwork.

I then came in and cleaned myself up while battling our infestation of fruit flies. (I've tried everything to get rid of them but they keep multiplying.) The kids woke up and I went to the freezer to get some food out for Miles when I realized that the freezer isn't staying cold and things were starting to defrost. Not wanting to deal with it, I went upstairs to change the sheets on Jackson's bed While I was moving the bed away from the wall to make it, the wheel popped off and I couldn't lift the bed high enough to get it back on. Feeling quite frustrated I started to go back downstairs and saw that a wasp was flying around the house which I proceed to feverishly run around swatting it with a towel until I was finally able to kill it.

After the red ant bites, the fruit fly infestation, the broken freezer, the bed with a missing wheel that now slants down on one side, and the wasp killing I've come to the conclusion that I'm ABSOLUTELY ready for my very missed husband to come home. Ugh.

*Please note; every time I use the word "we" relating to house projects, I really mean Gene. I am just the task master.

It's Nice to be Loved

We all know that Jackson’s new fascination is with Buzz Lightyear. Well, now his latest thing is that he (Buzz Lightyear) and I are going to get married and I’m going to be his princess. When we get married, I’ll be Cinderella (or Snow White depending on the day) and we’re going to get married in Cinderella’s castle. Then we’re going to have a party with chips, ice cream and cupcakes.

Can I remind him of this when he’s 30 and wants to marry someone else?

UPDATE: I was getting ready to post this when I went to pick the kids up from school. It seems that my sweet, charming Buzz Lightyear has decided to take his superheroness to the extreme. Apparently, he punched one of his friends in the nose today and then pushed him into a cement wall. When I asked him why he did it he simply replied, “Michael pushed me first.” The teachers informed me that he was very remorseful and said that he “really doesn’t want to play like that anymore.” I think it was the splattered blood everywhere that clued him into the fact that it wasn’t the best idea. A few hours later Jackson explained to me that he sometimes feels grumpy which is why he hits. Can you imagine the conversation I had with the 3-year-old explaining to him that the next time he feels “grumpy” to take a few deep breaths instead? Now he walks around practically hyperventilating!

Boys!

Our First Family Trip to Disney

We did it and survived!! We’re back from our trip to Disney and had a fantastic time. We covered most of the major parks – Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom. We saw Mickey, Donald, the Incredibles and, most importantly, Buzz Lightyear (and Woody!). We ate at fantastic restaurants including the Flying Fish CafĂ© at the Boardwalk, Jiko at the Animal Kingdom Lodge, and Coral Reef at Epcot. Since we were there to celebrate Nanny and Poppa’s 25th Anniversary they ate at Victoria and Albert’s, Disney’s #1 exclusive restaurant and were treated like royalty. We stayed right on Disney at the Wilderness Lodge and it was a completely different experience. I have a whole new respect for Walt and am still truly amazed of the empire that he created and the level of service we received during our entire trip. Besides spending some great quality time with everyone, the highlight for me was seeing Jackson’s reaction to the whole thing.

I know it’s clichĂ© to be enamored with the view from a child’s eye, but its fun to see things from that perspective every now and then. For example, it never occurred to me that Jack would think the characters we “met” were real. Or that the very fake looking animals in our safari ride were real. The poor kid was scared to death of so many things while we were there since he couldn’t grasp the concept that it fake. There’s an upside to viewing things like that – his new favorite character is Buzz Lightyear(who he stood on line to meet 6 times). At one point he had just finished meeting Buzz and then went on a Buzz Lightyear ride…well he couldn’t figure out how Buzz got from the place he just met him to inside the ride so fast! Speaking of Buzz, I thought the first time Jack met him he was going to pass out. You have to remember that he thinks he’s actually meeting the REAL Buzz Lightyear. So Gene and Jack wait on line to meet him and when it’s finally his turn he got completely star struck. Couldn’t say a word and just stared at him with an open mouth. Right after his turn was over Nanny & Poppa bought him a shirt with Buzz on it. Of course, we immediately had to wait on line again because Jackson had 2 questions he needed to ask Buzz. “Number 1 – Buzz, where’s your helmet?” (The character’s costume had the helmet pulled back.) “Number 2 – Buzz, I’m wearing your shirt.” So cute! Another day at the Magic Kingdom we went to a Mickey Mouse Clubhouse show (which was actually a lot of fun) and the host of the show asked all the kids to shout their names out and, without hesitation, Jack yelled out “Buzz Lightyear!”

Now, I certainly can’t leave Miles out of all this. Although he didn’t seem to care too much about the trip itself (he is only 6 months old!) he definitely wins the Tourist of the Year award. Even in the 95 degree heat, stuck in a stroller for most of the day with his helmet on, he never once fussed, complained or made an unhappy peep. He just hung out looking at all the people and just smiled away. We really are so lucky to have 2 great kids!

There were so many great times on this trip I can’t possibly jot them all down. It was a truly great trip and a really special way to celebrate a milestone anniversary. Thanks again Nanny & Poppa!!

(Once I can figure out how to upload some pics I’ll definitely add them.)

Day One

So I'm terrible about taking pictures, scrapbooking, or videoing anything because, even though I know that life is hectic, I think I will remember all of the cute, quirky, funny things that life brings on a daily basis. Well, this is not the case. I can't even remember what I had for breakfast, muchless what I did during the Summer of '92. With the arrival of Miles (who is 6 months old today!), I've realized that life moves way too fast and if I don't start documenting it's all going to become a blur of distant memories. Hence, the blog. I don't know how often I'll blog since I'm notorious for setting ridiculous goals that are near impossible to achieve. But I'm going to try. Really try. I may even start taking some pictures and putting them on my blog. We'll see. Again, I'm trying to be realistic.

Last night was a rough night. We're leaving for Disney in 2 days and Jack is getting very excited. Because of this excitement he's extremely hyper and doesn't want to sleep...at all. Miles went to bed at 7:30. Jackson (and all of his excitement) finally went to bed at 9:30. I then attempted to start gathering some things to pack for our trip. It didn't go very well since I'm a huge procrastinator and, even though I'm trying to trick my brain into believing that packing ahead of time is a good idea, my brain knows better and remembers that we still have a couple of days before packing must absolutely happen. After a mere 30 minutes I decided I was done with the whole packing thing. I was planning on watching some TV and procrastinating some more, but Miles decided to wake up at 10:30 to eat which isn't typical, but since he's only 6 months old I don't really know what "typical" is. After feeding Miles I went to bed at around midnight. Then Miles woke up at 1:30, 3:00 and 4:30. Jackson woke up at 3:30 and 6:45. As you can see, there wasn't a lot of sleep happening last night. I keep trying to remind myself that in 12-15 years when they don't need me anymore I'll be missing this time, but last night was tough to say the least.

Since I was up all night I had plenty of time to obsess about why Miles was waking up so much and came to the conclusion that he absolutely must have an ear infection and I must take him to the doctor first thing in the morning. I knew Jack was waking up from excitement, but since M doesn't have a clue about the trip I assumed he was sick (although he is completely happy and content as always). Gene dropped him off at daycare this morning and I was able to get him a doc appointment early this afternoon. To make a very long story short, he's 100% completely fine. Doc assessed it's just a growth spurt. I can't believe I just paid someone $20 to tell me my kid is growing. How embarrassing! Oh, and did I mention that while we were at the doc this happy, growing baby puked all over my work pants? So not only did I just have to leave the office for 2 1/2 hours and pay someone to tell me my kid is fine, I have to now sit at work for the rest of the day with dried baby vomit on my pants. (BTW, if I was a good blogger I'd actually post a pic of the baby puke on my pants!)

Good times.
